Ask For Salary Increase๐ฐ๐
Good morning, readers!๐
How are you doing today?
So You Want a Salary Increase? How Delightfully Courageous of You! ๐ฐ๐
At some point in every professional's journey, a subtle yet persistent thought begins to surface.
It typically appears around the time you take on your third additional responsibility or after your fifth "quick favour" that unexpectedly evolves into a complete project: "I should probably be earning more for this."
It's not a groundbreaking concept, of course.
Just a straightforward, logical realisation… which quickly escalates into a full-scale internal discussion about your value, the state of the economy, your boss's temperament, and whether requesting a raise is a sign of self-assurance or a surefire way to become known as "that employee." ๐
You begin your preparations.
You open a document, perhaps even a spreadsheet, because nothing screams "I deserve a raise" quite like Excel, and you jot down everything you’ve accomplished.
The late nights, the additional responsibilities you took on "temporarily" (how charming), the tangible results, and the intangible emotional effort of remaining courteous in meetings that could have easily been emails.
At some point, you lean back and reflect: Objectively, this is quite impressive.
Then, almost immediately: But what if they don’t perceive it that way? ๐คก
And just like that, you find yourself negotiating against your own interests before the meeting has even taken place.
Next, you make the most daring decision: you set up the meeting.
A tidy calendar invite with an innocuous title such as "Performance & Growth Discussion." Neutral. Professional. Totally non-threatening.
Your manager agrees. They might even throw in a smiley ๐
Now, let’s be honest: that smiley doesn’t convey any real information. It’s the corporate version of a poker face.
It could signify "happy to assist you" or "this is going to be awkward for both of us." You won’t find out until it’s too late. ๐
The day has come. You enter the meeting (or log in, with your camera on and your posture a tad too formal), equipped with arguments, statistics, and a meticulously rehearsed speech you’ve practised in the shower, in your mind, and perhaps while gazing at your reflection like a motivational speaker nobody requested.
You start off with confidence: "Considering my contributions and the current market benchmarks..."
A strong beginning. A solid tone. You’re on the right track. ๐ช
Your manager nods in agreement. They are attentive.
They respond: "We truly appreciate what you do."
And there it is. The phrase. The courteous, well-tailored introduction to anything at all.
Because what comes next is a type of corporate performance we all recognise: "Budgets are a bit constrained at the moment"
"Timing is a bit tricky" - "Let’s certainly revisit this in the next cycle" - "You’re already well-positioned within the range"
The range. Always this enigmatic, flexible idea that somehow expands just enough to encompass you… but never quite enough to elevate you. ๐✨
At times, just to keep the flame of hope flickering, you might catch a glimpse of something new: "We can consider a slight modification."
And for a fleeting, radiant moment, everything seems to fall into place.
Acknowledgment! Advancement! Fairness!
Until the figures come in.
And they’re… modest. Let’s say… symbolically uplifting.
Sufficient to boost your morale, if not your rent. You nod in agreement, naturally. You express your gratitude. You maintain your composure.
Yet inside, you’re engaged in intricate calculations involving groceries, inflation, and your life decisions. ๐ง ๐ธ
Post-meeting, the genuine dialogue starts with the one you have with yourself.
You replay the entire scenario: Should I have requested more? Was I too lenient? Too blunt? Too empathetic?
Should I have brought up that recruiter who reached out to me last week? ๐
And suddenly, almost as if by magic, your LinkedIn profile begins to seem like it could benefit from a little update.
Nothing too drastic. Just… refreshed. Strategically prominent. Merely coincidental, of course. ๐
Here’s the hard truth: requesting a salary increase is never solely about the money.
It involves positioning, timing, perception, and yes, a touch of bravery.
It’s about recognising that your work holds value and being prepared to vocalise it, even when the reply may be unclear, delayed, or couched in corporate jargon.
And at times, despite your utmost efforts, the response may not meet your expectations.
Not because you were mistaken, but because organisations operate on their own logic, one that doesn’t always correspond with effort, impact, or fairness.
Yet, you still ask. Because refraining from asking guarantees a single outcome.
Asking… at least opens the door to new possibilities. ๐ช
And if nothing shifts? Well, let’s just say the market has a peculiar way of rectifying issues when internal systems fail. ๐
Ultimately, the true skill lies not just in asking for more.
It’s in understanding your worth, gauging the atmosphere, and determining how to respond to the answer you receive, whether that means staying, renegotiating, or quietly strategising your next steps.
Because sometimes, the most significant raise you’ll ever receive… doesn’t originate from the same source you approached for it. ๐
