Quiet Quitting🤫

Hello my dear readers!!!👋

Today, I want to get right to the point: Why are so many people declaring "Enough" at work?! It's referred to as QUIET QUITTING...👻

If you've been scrolling through TikTok, browsing LinkedIn, or even caught snippets of conversations at your neighbourhood coffee shop, you’ve likely come across the term Quiet Quitting.

The phrase sounds quite dramatic, almost like a covert uprising in the workplace, but in reality, it’s much more understated (and far more prevalent) than you might assume.😏

Quiet Quitting doesn’t involve storming out of the office or dramatically placing a resignation letter on your manager’s desk.

Instead, it’s about arriving at work, fulfilling your responsibilities, and then… stopping there!🛑

No additional hours. No, “of course, I’ll take that on even if it’s outside my job description.” No shame in logging off at 5.

To put it simply: it’s about performing the tasks you’re compensated for, and nothing beyond that.

Why Are People Engaging in This?🤔

The simple answer? Burnout and boundaries.

In the wake of the pandemic, which blurred the distinctions between 'work' and 'life,' many individuals began to reflect: Why am I compromising my mental health for a job that might not even acknowledge it?🧠

Here are some prevalent factors driving this trend:

  • The hustle fatigue – Being incessantly urged to 'go the extra mile' with little to show for the effort.
  • Lack of clear rewards – When promotions and salary increases seem unattainable, what’s the point of pushing further?
  • A shift in mindset – Generation Z (and many millennials as well) are increasingly outspoken about establishing boundaries and prioritising their well-being.

It’s not so much about being lazy; it’s more about self-preservation.🪞

For managers, it can be quite challenging!

To begin with, it's difficult to identify why individuals are not underperforming; they're simply not exceeding expectations anymore.

Emails are responded to, projects are completed, and tasks are ticked off; however, the additional enthusiasm? The innovative concepts? The late-night hustle? That has vanished.😶‍🌫️

And here's the twist: occasionally, this can be a positive development.

Perhaps the real problem isn't that employees are contributing 'too little', but rather that organisations have been demanding too much for an extended period!💥

So, is Quiet Quitting a negative thing? It really depends on your viewpoint:

  • From the standpoint of an employee, it can seem like a way to reclaim your time, energy, and mental well-being.🔋
  • From the viewpoint of a company, it could indicate a lack of engagement, poor morale, or even the early signs of an employee planning to leave for good.🏃‍♀️

The reality? It’s a combination of both.

Quiet Quitting serves as a red flag, not for unmotivated employees, but for workplace cultures that require transformation.🐦‍🔥

This isn't just a trend—it's indicative of a larger cultural transformation.

Individuals are beginning to realise that their careers shouldn't consume their entire lives, and truthfully, perhaps that's not a negative development.

The true obstacle isn't halting Quiet Quitting; it's creating environments where employees don't feel compelled to resort to it!🫸
