Nobody Is Irreplaceable in a Multinational, Including You‼️⚠️
Good morning, readers!👋
How are you doing today?
Let's rip the band-aid off, shall we?🩹
You know that voice in your head that whispers, "but they NEED me, I know everything about Project X"? Yeah. Kill it. Bury it. Send flowers.
Because in a multinational, that voice is lying to you with the confidence of a LinkedIn influencer selling a "10x your career" course.💀
The Org Chart Doesn't Love You Back❤️🩹 "But I'm Different, Andrea"🙄
Here's the plot twist nobody puts in the onboarding deck: you are a line item.
A very nice, very competent, occasionally brilliant line item, but a line item.
The company has survived restructurings, mergers, three rebrands and at least one CEO who thought "synergy" was a personality trait.
It will survive you leaving, too.📊
I spent 10+ years in Talent Acquisition watching this exact drama unfold on repeat.
Someone "indispensable" resigns. Panic for 48 hours.
Then, plot twist, someone internal steps up, a replacement is hired in six weeks, and three months later, nobody can quite remember what the fuss was about.
🎭The machine didn't even hiccup. It just... recalibrated.
Sure, you are. So was everyone else who said that to me across Siemens, GM, Microsoft, GSK, Nestlé and every other acronym-loving giant I worked at.
Multinationals are designed to absorb individual loss; that's not an insult, it's literally good risk management.
Redundancy isn't a dirty word in engineering; it shouldn't be one in HR either.🏗️
The company isn't being cruel by being able to function without you.
It's just... functioning. As designed. As it should.
- Stop performing martyrdom for an audience that isn't watching.🎪 Nobody's handing out medals for being the last one on Slack at 9pm.
- Build your value into your skills, not your seat. Your expertise travels with you. Your job title does not.🧳
- Negotiate like you know you're replaceable because pretending otherwise makes you defensive, not powerful. The people who get raises and promotions are the ones managing their career like a portfolio, not begging for tenure.💼
- Save the loyalty for people, not logos. Mentors, teammates, and your own integrity. Invest there. The brand on your badge will not invest back in you with the same energy.🪪
Here's the part where this stops being depressing and becomes genuinely useful:
Once you actually accept you're replaceable, something weirdly freeing happens: you stop optimising your life around a company's approval and start optimising it around your own trajectory.
You become harder to exploit and easier to promote because you're finally negotiating from clarity instead of fear.🎯
So no, you're not irreplaceable. Nobody is. Congratulations, that's actually the good news.🎉
