Career fairs, The Nightmare!😭☠️

Good evening, readers!πŸ‘‹

How are you doing today?

Ah, career fairs. The Disneyland of professional letdowns. 🎒✨

Instead of thrilling rides, you’re met with lines. Endless, soul-crushing lines.

And rather than enchantment, you hear… “Have you checked our careers page?” 😭☠️

You enter feeling ready. CV in hand (on quality paper, of course), LinkedIn polished, elevator pitch practised in front of the mirror as if you’re preparing for a TED Talk audition.

You’re set. You’re self-assured. You’re marketable.

Fast forward 12 minutes: you’re perspiring in business casual attire, gripping a tote bag, and reevaluating every decision that brought you to this moment. 🫠

The vibe? Electric. And by electric, I mean somewhat chaotic with a heavy dose of desperation.

Hundreds of candidates wandering about as if it’s a networking safari.

Everyone’s grinning just a tad too enthusiastically, shaking hands as if they’re sealing million-euro contracts, and tossing around terms like synergy, impact, and growth mindset as if they genuinely relish saying them. πŸ€πŸ˜…

As you make your way to the first company booth, you feel the weight of the moment.

This is your chance. You present your pitch concisely, organised, and even a bit charming.

The recruiter nods in acknowledgement, glances at your CV for about 2.7 seconds, and utters the fateful words: "Feel free to apply online."

Ah yes. The journey was worth it.

You left your home, navigated through throngs of people, practised your narrative… only to be sent to a website you’ve already visited 47 times this week. Classic. πŸ’»πŸ‘

Now, let’s discuss the booths. They all seem like identical replicas.

Same roll-up banners, same corporate grins, same recycled slogans about "a dynamic and inclusive environment."

At some point, you begin to question whether you’re the one being evaluated… or if this is some sort of social experiment. πŸ§ͺ

And the discussions? Excruciatingly polite.

You’re striving to make an impression, while they’re just trying to get through the day.

You share your accomplishments, your global experience, your meticulously crafted skill set… and they reply with: "That’s interesting."

Is it really? IS IT? 😢

In the meantime, competition is everywhere.

The person beside you casually states he speaks four languages and has "just returned from a leadership program in Singapore." Nice.

You once managed a group project in college where no one responded on WhatsApp. Same energy. πŸŒπŸ“‰

Let’s not overlook the freebies. Oh, the freebies.

Pens, notebooks, tote bags, stress balls (very on-brand), and perhaps even a random USB stick from 2012.

At some point, you realise your greatest achievement of the day is becoming a collector of corporate swag.

You came for a job, but you’re leaving with a bag full of logos. πŸŽ’πŸ˜‚

Hours go by. Your energy wanes. Your smile turns… obligatory.

Your “networking enthusiasm” gradually shifts into “strategic avoidance of eye contact.”

You begin to recognise the same individuals making the same rounds as if it’s a career fair version of Groundhog Day. πŸ”„

And when you finally exit? Feet aching. Mind exhausted. Hope… a bit battered.

You sit down, glance at your tote bag, and ponder: "What exactly did I accomplish today?"

But let’s be honest. Career fairs do impart some lessons. Resilience. Patience.

The skill to pitch yourself under pressure while internally spiralling.

And most importantly, they equip you for the ultimate corporate skill: appearing engaged while questioning everything. πŸ˜ŒπŸ’Ό

See you at the next one. Or, you know… online. 😢
