Objectives That Motivate💪🏋️
Good afternoon, readers!👋
How are you doing today?
(also known as How to Transform "Increase Synergy" into Something That Actually Resonates with People)
Ah, yes, Objectives That Inspire... Those wonderfully glossy corporate aspirations that proclaim:
"Foster cross-departmental excellence through scalable value generation."
Nothing quite ignites excitement like scalable value generation. I can hardly hold back my enthusiasm.💀
Let’s face it: most objectives fail to inspire; they create mild confusion.
They linger in presentation slides, flanked by arrows, gradients, and a stock image of someone celebrating in business attire.
Meanwhile, real people are pondering:
- Will this simplify my life?
- Will this lead to a promotion?
- Or at the very least… will there be snacks?
The Issue with "Strategic Objectives".
At some point between Q3 and Q4, objectives undergo a transformation.
They begin as: "Let’s enhance customer response time."
And then morph into: "Implement an omnichannel responsiveness framework to boost client-centric speed."
Well done. You’ve effectively demotivated the entire team.🏆
If your objective requires a glossary, a translator, and a therapist, it’s far from motivating.
It’s a hostage scenario.
What Truly Drives People (Get Ready).
Clarity – "We aim to reduce response time from 48 hours to 12."
Radical! Precise! A bit daunting! Excellent!
Ownership – "You’re in charge of this."
Nothing inspires like being held publicly accountable.🫠
Visible progress – A scoreboard is always more effective than a manifesto.
Meaning – "This helps customers stop complaining at us."
Now we’re getting somewhere.
Motivation doesn’t stem from corporate jargon; it arises from tangible progress.
The Gym Analogy (Because We Had to).
Picture entering a gym where the trainer states:
"Your goal is to enhance your musculoskeletal performance framework."
You’d likely turn around and leave.🚪
Now, envision them saying: "We’re going to assist you in achieving 10 genuine push-ups in 30 days."
Clear! Quantifiable! A bit uncomfortable! Inspiring!
Motivating objectives resemble effective workouts:
- They cause a bit of discomfort.
- They can be measured.
- You recognise when you’ve succeeded.
- No one ever mentions the term "synergy."
The Harsh Reality.
Individuals don’t rise each day motivated by "yearly alignment goals."
They rise each day motivated by: Succeeding! Expanding! Receiving acknowledgment! Not squandering their time!
If your goal doesn’t relate to one of these, it’s merely ornamental ambition.
A Quick Assessment.
Before you share your next "strategic goal," consider:
Would anyone choose to wear this on a T-shirt?👕
If the response is no, revise it.
Because "Facilitate scalable ecosystems" doesn’t translate well onto fabric.
In summary.
Goals don’t inspire. Clear victories do.
Ambition doesn’t inspire. Progress does.
And nothing extinguishes motivation quicker than a 42-slide presentation filled with gradients.
Now move forward, establish goals that empower people, not lull them to sleep.💪🔥
