Bad Candidates' Experience👎
Happy scorching Friday, everyone!
Where I reside, it's peak summer and I'm practically melting...🫠
I hope you're faring better...
Today, I want to address a pressing issue (just to keep it relevant): the bad candidate's experience.
A poor candidate experience signifies the unfavourable feelings and perceptions a job applicant encounters throughout the recruitment process.😔
This can deter candidates from reapplying, damage a company's reputation, and even affect customer loyalty.
👉Why is it important?
A negative experience for candidates can cause top talent to leave and harm the employer's brand.
Candidates frequently share their experiences publicly (such as on Glassdoor and LinkedIn), which can influence future hiring and even impact consumer views.😏
Here's what typically makes an experience "bad":
1. Poor Communication: 🗣️
No response received after submitting an application Prolonged silence or being ignored following interviews Insufficient updates or ambiguous timelines 2. Disrespect of Time: 🫡
Lengthy, redundant application forms Unjustifiable delays between different stages of the interview process Interviewers arriving late or failing to show up Countless interview rounds lacking a clear objective 3. Lack of Transparency: 🪟
Absence of a clear job description or set expectations Unexpected alterations in role, salary, or work location Ambiguous or absent feedback post-interviews 4. Unprofessional Behavior: 🗃️
Interviewers who are rude or unprepared Chaotic scheduling Inquiring about inappropriate or irrelevant topics 5. Non-inclusive or Biased Process:⛔
Use of discriminatory language or actions Failure to provide accommodations for accessibility requirements A panel lacking diversity, with evident bias in treatment 6. Misalignment Between Role and Reality: 💯
Exaggerating the role or company culture Not addressing critical issues upfront
Side-by-side examples of good vs. bad candidate experiences to make the contrast clear:
Good Experience | Bad Experience |
---|---|
Application takes 5–10 minutes. Clear instructions. | Application takes 45+ minutes. Requires account setup, resume upload and manual data entry. |
Confirmation email sent immediately. | No confirmation or status update after applying. |
Recruiter follows up within a week. | Weeks of silence, or never hear back at all. |
Good Experience | Bad Experience |
---|---|
Interview scheduled quickly with clear agenda and who you'll meet. | No context for interview. Last-minute changes or no-shows. |
Interviewers are engaged, respectful, and knowledgeable about your resume. | Interviewers are distracted, unprepared, or ask irrelevant/inappropriate questions. |
You’re told next steps and a clear timeline. | Vague response: “We’ll get back to you,” and then nothing. |
Feedback provided after each stage. | No feedback at all, even after multiple interviews. |
Good Experience | Bad Experience |
---|---|
Clear, timely offer with details on salary, benefits, and expectations. | Offer delayed, vague, or differs from what was discussed in interviews. |
Rejections are kind, with some feedback or encouragement. | Rejections are cold, generic, or completely absent. Ghosting is common. |
