Clients requesting too much🥴

Who's ready for summer holidays??!!🌞

Today's discussion revolves around 'Clients requesting too much🥴'.

Whether you are a consultant, freelancer, or employee, interacting with clients is an inevitable part of the job.

Let me begin by pointing out two distinct types of clients:

  • Those who believe they are paying for your time, yet what they truly consume is your peace of mind.
  • Those who expect a high-end service for a minimal budget, and also demand unlimited revisions.

I get it; when you purchase something, you want to maximise its value. But where have the core values disappeared to?!😔

RESPECT - TRUST - ETHICS - COLLABORATION - APPRECIATION - SINCERITY, and so on. It seems these principles have vanished from the business landscape...

This is a list of the top sad facts about dealing with clients:

  1. They desire champagne-level outcomes while operating on a soda budget.
They anticipate high-quality results but are unwilling to compensate appropriately for them.🍾
  2. "Just one more thing..." never truly signifies just one more thing.
Minor "quick fixes" evolve into a never-ending cycle of unpaid revisions.
  3. Boundaries hold no value if they are not enforced.
Once you agree to something, they will expect it indefinitely.
  4. They think "ASAP" implies that your other commitments — and your personal life — can be put on hold. Urgency serves as their justification for inadequate planning.🏃
  5. They will laud you as a genius… until you request fair compensation.
Flattery is abundant — until the bill is presented.
  6. You forfeit more than just time — you sacrifice energy, sleep, and your enthusiasm for your work. Overly demanding clients sap the joy from your creativity.
  7. They seldom view themselves as "difficult."
For them, it’s your duty to accommodate, not their obligation to show respect.🤯

You know what? Sometimes you just want to shout, GO TO HELL! I'M DONE!

However, it's not as simple as it seems... perhaps we lack the personality, maybe we are afraid of the repercussions, possibly we are in dire need of that job, or maybe we just haven't learned how to say no!

But guys, saying NO can be trained:

  1. 🧠Understand your limits first. Get clear on what you will and won’t accept. Establish your working hours, revision boundaries, and what is considered out of scope.
  2. 🗣️Use polite yet assertive phrases. Prepare responses such as: "I’d love to assist, but I’m currently at capacity." "That falls outside the scope of this project, but I can provide a quote for the additional work." "I don’t have the availability for that right now."
  3. 🔑Give yourself time. If you find it difficult to decline immediately, say: "Let me check my schedule and get back to you." This allows you the space to make a calm decision.
  4. 💬Be truthful, not apologetic. Declining doesn’t make you impolite or lazy. A straightforward "no" is more considerate than a begrudging "yes."
  5. 🧘Keep in mind: every ‘yes’ is a ‘no’ to something else. Taking on more work for a demanding client reduces your time for valuable clients, self-care, and personal growth. You safeguard your quality (and mental well-being) by saying no.
  6. 🏋️Practice in low-pressure scenarios. Start by saying no to minor requests (e.g., favours, additional meetings). This builds your confidence for setting larger boundaries.
  7. ✨Avoid over-explaining. "No" is a complete sentence. You can be kind, but don’t feel the need to justify endlessly.
